Are we there yet?

  • How about a little history.
I started this blog in 2003. It was to be all about our experience in house building. It's been an amazing journey. Sometimes I look around and I can't believe we acutally built this house and when I say we I mean we. Myself, my husband, his cousin Russ, our Dads and assorted friends and other relatives. We did hire a contractor to pour our foundation and we had a horrible experience with some drywallers but otherwise it was all us. We have been in the house now for one year. There are still a lot of details to finish up. I have some guilt about not posting house projects since I am a member of a house blog ring but there is a lot of valuable information on house building here so while my posts are more about living in our dream house you can still search my archives for posts on every aspect of house building. So? Are we there yet? Nearly. We still need doors and trim inside.......some flooring and tiling needs to be done so stay tuned-we'll get there.

Time Management

Has it been that long?  Sigh.  While I love my job and I still consider it my dream job, working from home has it's pros and cons.  On the pro side, I don't have to leave the house or even get dressed if I don't want to.  I can set my own hours and I am a morning person so when I get up at 5:30 to see Dave off to work I usually start working.  I can stop for coffee, take a walk, go back to bed..........it's all up to me.  Sometimes there are deadlines but mostly it's continuing work.

However, the cons for me are it's hard to turn it off, the five o'clock whistle does not blow.  Last week I realized that I have not been posting, haven't quilted or done a house project in so long that I needed to rethink my schedule.  I have missed all these things that are what working at home is all about so I'm changing my schedule!  It's good to be back.

Gosh, I can relate. I work a mostly part time job but most days it feels like full time, so when I get home in the evening around 5:00 my half hour dinner often turns into an hour, and then I find a book next to my bed I haven't picked up in a while, and then there goes all hope of working on the house that night. I'm glad I don't work at home, though, because I need the time away from my house to refresh my mind. I get overloaded if I'm staring at the same projects for hours and days on end. I'm glad it works out for you to work at home though. I'm hoping when I get finished with this house I'll be able to spend more time working on my writing at home rather than going to the library or coffee shop to write.

Finished with your house? I laugh. I don't think ours will ever be actually finished. It's been 4 years now and I am still looking at OSB stairs, no trim and lots of tiling that needs to be done. It's amazing how you get "used" to these things. It's hard, once you determine the house is ready enough to live in the projects become easier to ignore :-) One day I hope for some guilt free reading too.

Hi Jane - I can relate too! I work two days in the office, three days at home. It is a blessing - I can run some laundry through, load the dishwasher, things like that throughout the day, but I also find myself checking email before the family is out in the morning, and after they are home in the evening. I have a hard time turning it off too. Your home is looking great by the way, and I love all the outdoor pictures that you post (especially since I'm here in Texas and my most exciting outdoor pictures - kids aside - are of bluebonnets and the occasional butterfly)
