Are we there yet?

  • How about a little history.
I started this blog in 2003. It was to be all about our experience in house building. It's been an amazing journey. Sometimes I look around and I can't believe we acutally built this house and when I say we I mean we. Myself, my husband, his cousin Russ, our Dads and assorted friends and other relatives. We did hire a contractor to pour our foundation and we had a horrible experience with some drywallers but otherwise it was all us. We have been in the house now for one year. There are still a lot of details to finish up. I have some guilt about not posting house projects since I am a member of a house blog ring but there is a lot of valuable information on house building here so while my posts are more about living in our dream house you can still search my archives for posts on every aspect of house building. So? Are we there yet? Nearly. We still need doors and trim inside.......some flooring and tiling needs to be done so stay tuned-we'll get there.

Junk Drawers

It's not just me right?  Everybody's got'em.  Problem for me is that just about all my drawers become junk drawers over time.

Junk_drawer_contents_1 All this crap (and then some) was in four drawers in my kitchen.  I really don't know how it gets in there or what most of it is or why I decided that we needed to keep it.

I have been on an organizing kick so I emptied all the drawers on the counter and have been going through it.  Most of it is ending up in the garbage.

Then I had four drawers to organize.  The first drawer has important stuff like bottle openers, lighters, batteries and twist ties.  There is space under the basket so I put the booklets that come with all my kitchen gadgets like my new coffee pot.

Junk_drawer_2 The next drawer is only about 3" deep.  Not sure what to do with that drawer so I put treats/snacks and cake decorating stuff.  Important stuff but not stuff you want out in the open.

This is SO much better.  My plastic was in the corner cabinet with the lazy Susan's and it was hopeless. I could never find anything that was matching.

We will see how long they stay like this.  I have organized them before and they always seem to end up full of confusing odds and ends before long.

Hi! I hear you on the disorganized drawers issue. One thing that I've found that helps them stay organized is that I label the drawer on the inside with what goes inside. (I put the labels on that little piece of wood that sticks out behind the drawer front so that you read them when you look down at the drawer.) This way, if someone else unloads the dishwasher, they know where things go. This has helped us tremendously. We have a ton of those little tiny drawers designed for spices or something, so I was able to divide things up like spatulas, measuring stuff, peeling stuff, etc. Good luck!

You go girl. Keep up the good work

No! It's not just you! I desperately need to get into this mode, and particularly with the
!#%+*&! plastic! (Lids? That fit...what? Where?)

Well, Jane, this whole junk drawer issue just leaves me at a loss for words. First and foremost I estimate someone (anyone) would have to be living in a house roughly 8 to 9 years to accumulate that much crap in one drawer. Let’s inventory the contents, shall we? This is just a quick look: pair of old school scissors, various plastic anchors (in bags) carmex, 36 cents, couple of alien wrenches, dead aaa battery, broken light bulb, cable splitter, safety pin, ori-gel, green pencil sharpener, miscellaneous beer caps, orange koozy, 2 peanuts, unsharpened pencil, pen, miscellaneous screws and toggle screws, box cutter, box of screws, some device you use on an orange, red pepper, a 1” piece of 5/8” hose of some type, plastic cap, metal lid, and a whole bunch of other shit too numerous to mention. How did you acquire all of it? Will you have to get a hazardous waste permit before you begin? What does it all mean? I know growing up mom always said I was the orderly one, once again, she was right. If you find yourself in need of a drawer consultant you let me know, since your family I offer a 3% discount off of retail prices.
