Are we there yet?

  • How about a little history.
I started this blog in 2003. It was to be all about our experience in house building. It's been an amazing journey. Sometimes I look around and I can't believe we acutally built this house and when I say we I mean we. Myself, my husband, his cousin Russ, our Dads and assorted friends and other relatives. We did hire a contractor to pour our foundation and we had a horrible experience with some drywallers but otherwise it was all us. We have been in the house now for one year. There are still a lot of details to finish up. I have some guilt about not posting house projects since I am a member of a house blog ring but there is a lot of valuable information on house building here so while my posts are more about living in our dream house you can still search my archives for posts on every aspect of house building. So? Are we there yet? Nearly. We still need doors and trim inside.......some flooring and tiling needs to be done so stay tuned-we'll get there.

Christmas Weiner Dogs

Christmas_dogs

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Let your heart be light
From now on,
our troubles will be out of sight
Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Make the Yule-tide gay,
From now on,
our troubles will be miles away.

Here we are as in olden days,
happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who are dear to us
gather near to us once more.

Through the years we all will be together
If the Fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough.
And have yourself a merry little Christmas now.

Great Team Work!!

We have most of the tree moved, the hen house moved and the drive clear.

Stevetractor Our good friend and neighbor Steve came down with his tractor and drug the tree out of the way as Dave cut it up with the chainsaw.  My Dad moved the smaller branches.

Henhouse My Mom and I completely moved the hen house and fence about 50' west of the drive way out of the way of the trees that are going to have to be trimmed tomorrow.

Cleardrive At least the drive is clear to get in and out now.  There is still a lot of work to do.

We need to get an estimate for the fence and gate that was destroyed so it can be replaced.

They have totaled Dave's Jeep so he is looking for a new car today.  My 88 Jimmy only had liability on it so we are gonna have to find a new passenger door for it at the junk yard.

All in all we were really lucky, nothing hit the house, nobody got hurt and it needed cleaning up anyway.

Time for a hot bath and a nap!

Oops!

Bigtree What a wind storm!  We were without power from about 8pm until sometime this morning.

It was flickering off and on most of the day though.  Last night at around 2:30 am we heard a crash.  Decided that nothing fell on the house so went back to bed.  We got a surprise this morning!

This big old maple tree came down in the night.

Cardamage Lucky for my Dad that when he got home from work last night at 11:30 he parked inside the gate. That also got him a day off today.

Not so lucky for Dave and I or the fence, gates and greenhouse.

Mycar It took out my passenger door.

Davescar It bounced off Dave's hood and front end.

Another branch make a good dent in the roof.

Greenhouse_1 It took out the greenhouse but lucky for the chickens it just missed them.  It must have been a frightening time for them.

Fence_1

Took out the main gates and fence.

Garbagecans Those are our garbage cans.

Peoplegate Guess we are going to need a new gate.

So, Dave didn't go to work today and we are borrowing a second chainsaw from a neighbor and we will start clearing the drive.   We called our insurance and got that paperwork going.

The river is pretty high again and from what I hear the storm is not over yet.  The good news?  Well, we will have a nice pile of wood for our summers around the campfire.

Calling All Birders

I want to pass along the coolest thing for learning  bird songs   I always have trouble with that when out in the field.  It is a great educational tool and the perfect gift for every bird lover, the easy to carry handheld Identiflyer plays the songs of the wild birds wherever you go. The Identiflyer plays amazingly clear digital birdsong recordings from interchangeable sets of themed song cards. It comes with a guidebook and an ear piece for quiet listening.

Birdsongset   You can buy the unit with two cards or the entire set for a great price here at Whatbird.

So, if you have bird watcher in the family or you yourself are one check it out.

Water Filter Maintenance

We have been meaning to get around to it.  You know how it is.

Water_filter We have our own well and our water is really good, very crisp and cold.

This particular water filter needed a special wrench (that came with it course) to open it to change the filter.  Somehow this got misplaced so we kept putting it off.

Here is one big reason not to put this task off.

Clogged_water_filter Pure clay.

I'm amazed that the water was even clear to drink.

I think I'll pick up an extra filter and write the next date on the calendar.

So, if you've got a water filter and you haven't changed it in a while you might want to check it out.
